Q: What kind of solder to use for stained glass?
A: There are several types that we can recommend.
There is 60/40 or 50/50.
This is the ratio of tin/lead.
We like to use 50/50 as it seems works the best. Some people prefer to use lead free solder. Due to the effects of lead and the environmental reasons of a lead free existence.
As long as we have the studio ventilated then the amount of solder is small.
It is recommend that if children are working with solder that the lead free solder is preferred.
But we have heard some people say it is harder to work with.
It has been found that lead free solder doesn't make reliable, sturdy joints.
It melts around 250 degrees C vs lead solder melts at 183- 185 degrees C. So your soldering iron needs to be much hotter.
We find that working with the solder - 50/50 - we get the best results with a smooth solid solder finish.
