What kind of glass to practice stained glass techniques on

by Rene
(USA)

Q: I am just starting out and I want to know what kind of plain glass that I can use to practice on. Can I use window glass if so what quality would be equal or close to?

Our A: We recommend that you find a stained glass store or a Hobby Lobby - purchase cathedral glass- 1/8" thick - light texture on front and smooth on the back.

Cut from the smooth side but mark pattern on the texture front side.

Anyway, that would be the best type of glass to practice on.

You may find glass for sale on the internet - check through our discount stained glass supplies section.

You could try a store that offers stained glass classes can help provide pieces that you can practice on - they may even give scrap away for free.

Try cutting a simple design such as squares or triangles. Get your feet wet with straight cuts then move forward with curves.
