Let's Go Through a Stained Glass Window Hanging Project

Okay, when you think of stained glass the first thing you think about is a beautiful stained glass window hanging in a church stained glass window or even in a picture window!

However stained glass can be made and used just about anywhere you want to add some color, some design, or just for fun. We made a beautiful piece of stained glass that works great in our sun-room.

The windows are an odd shape but we wanted something that would show interest besides the plants and the view of the back yard.

Plus, it covered up an ugly window, provides a gorgeous array of light and added privacy (we had a run with a peeping Tom once but that is another story).

We picked a design that had a leafy feeling, which adds to the view of the back yard. The stained glass is not attached as an insert window panel but hangs in the window.

In order to make it an actual window, you need to measure the window on all sides and from top to bottom if you are going to get a nice fit inside a window. It is best to leave about a 1/16" of an inch gap so it will fit perfectly into the window.

To see how to do this, visit our section on how to do stained glass window panels.

To create this piece used the copper foil method and the pattern came from a book we found at the library.

We liked the leaf design and the use of clear glass to get different textures in the pattern. When the sun shines on it - we get a rainbow of colors in the room.

We made the stained glass about 3" smaller than the window itself. Once we finished producing the glass, we made a wood frame, with a width of 1-1/2", to fit around the entire design.

We attached 2 hooks on the top and hung it in the window against the wood trim of the window.

If you have an area that you are not sure just exactly how to design – whether you want to use drapes, shutters or shades, keep in mind that you can hang a stained glass window hanging in that area.

Just think of the flair you will give to a room, plus you will get some privacy but a lot of light. It is a great way to finish a plain window.
