Make an Amazing Stained Glass Frame to Finish Your Art Projects

Making a stained glass frame is a project that could be fun to produce and show off a family member, a child, a friend, whomever you would like.

It also adds a little bit of class to any table or bookcase.

So, let's get right to making a stained glass frame...

Steps:

1. It is important that you keep a square to keep your design level. You sure don’t want the frame to come out crocked. You can make this any size you want. If you do a large frame be sure to make it secure with additional wires. Follow the directions provided on our site for copper foil or lead came.

2. Decide on a design. This design could be flowers, abstract, a continuation from one side to the other. You can use your own creativity.

3. Decide the size of the rectangle in the center for the picture.

4. Produce your stained glass leaving an opening for the picture.

5. You can frame the frame with either channeling or small wood frame.

6. Produce a small wood bead rectangle on the back to hold the glass and the picture. (Lowe’s sells clear glass that they will cut for you)

7. Produce an easel with heavy cardboard or metal so that the picture will stand up. Or you could put a hook on the back to hang on a wall or in a window.

8. Once the stained glass frame is produced you can put in your favorite picture.

Steps for making a MOSAIC Stained Glass Frame:

We found a site that shows how to make mosaic frames and thought it would be good to offer to you as well. We describe briefly how to produce. Since we did the mosaic stepping stones this will offer a different and beautiful way to show off your talents.

What you will need to create a mosaic frame:

  • Plywood
  • Timber beading
  • Small nails
  • Aandpaper
  • Aaw
  • Acrylic undercoat
  • Broken glass or broken ceramic tiles
  • Grout
  • Varnish

Steps:

1. With the saw cut a window in your plywood. The size of the frame is your choice.

2. Use the timber beading for the outer edge framing and the inside casing. Nail the timber framing in place around the outer and inner edges.

3. Sand the timber framing until smooth, then add the acrylic undercoating, let dry completely, then apply a 2nd coat.

4. You can apply a coat or 2 of any paint choice if you want a painted finish for the outer edges.

5. Mix the grout, follow the directions on the outside of the package, then fill the frame almost 3/4 full with the grout.

6. Add the broken pieces of glass or broken tiles as your creativity will allow. The design should be yours. Press firmly so that the tiles will stay in place. Do not push them down too far or they will get lost in the grout. A popsicle stick works great to push the tiles down.

7. If more grout is needed around the tiles you can do so, then wipe off any excess grout with a damp clean cloth.

8. Once you have created the look you want, let it dry for several days.

9. On the stepping stones, Randy put on a clear waterproofing sealer. This helps protect the frame and the grout.

10. You can attach an easel to the back or a hook for hanging.

We hope that shed some light on how to make a stained glass frame. Don't forget to show us your artwork when it's finished!
