Signing stained glass art

by Arlene
(Pa.)

Q: Hi, I just found your website browsing for my question, and am so glad I found it!! I've been searching for an answer for a year, believe it or not, to my question.

I often see stained glass artists advertise their work as "signed"....and I would love to do that on my pieces especially since I sell them, but I don't know how they sign them.....??

Is it merely done with an egraving tool?? And if so, WHERE do they sign it??....on a solder line??

I just wanted to get some clear information on how to sign my items. Thank you so much!!

Arlene

A: For signing your designs I would recommend getting etching tools and etching your name and date in the glass itself. I would not sign anything on the solder.

The other way to sign is with a gold fine tip permanent pen signing your name at the bottom right corner.

If you have a wood frame around your design- you could sign with permanent ink on the wood frame.
I hope these suggestions are helpful. Good luck to you!!

Be sure to share your art in our stained glass making section!

Solution for signing your work
by: Hopeit

I take a small piece of scrap glass approx 1" X 4" and foil it. I then take copper wire I have silvered and bend them to form my initials and year. Make sure the wire letters and numbers touch the top and bottom edges of the foiled 1" X 4" glass and then solder the wires directly to the top and bottom of the glass edges. i finish the edges with a solder edge and patina the piece. You can put a piece of double sided foam tape on the back and attach it to any place on the piece you would like...It has a unique look to it. Good Luck!
