Let's Get Started on Your Journey of Making Money Selling Stained Glass
The first step in making money from your hobby, passion, & sell art is to put a plan together on your business thoughts and figure out how much it will cost. It doesn't have to be like the plans with executive summaries and all that jazz. It just needs to outline the main points of your business and how you are going to sell art through that plan. There are a number of sectors to a business and a lot more to making money from your hobby than just selling some of you art, putting on stained glass classes, opening a shop, and so forth. I have started businesses, worked as an accountant and advisor to small businesses, and Randy has built a successful business prior to working on this site. It is important who you take advice from. We may not know everything about everything, but we can lead you in the right direction if you would like to turn your stained glass ventures into a money making machine. There are some critical factors that you must consider as you plan to sell art. It's o.k. to get excited and say, I want to make money, but let's set up the business accordingly so the money comes easy. A great example that is related to the arts is a gentleman named Preston Reuther who was disabled and was forced to work at home. To make a long story short, he took his passion of wire jewelry and put his knowledge online which turned into a business that makes him more per month than he used to make in a year. Google his name to find his story - it's worth the time.
Back to stained glass business. The main ingredients that you will have to configure at some point in time to start your business are: - Team - all businesses (successful ones at least) have a team.
- Mission - why are you doing this? Is it just to make money or to serve a greater good?
- Cashflow - how will you finance your business, can you bootstrap, what's your budget, can you reinvest your profits?
- Communications - What is your selling and marketing strategy. There are many great ways to market, especially an art. This is the fun part here.
- Systems - don't work yourself to death. Implement systems that will enable your business to run smoothly and efficiently.
- Legal - Have a CPA and attorney to deal with the tax and legal side of things.
- Product/Service - Since we're talking glass art, this will be your product, but there are some variations that you must consider regarding your product and/or service.
This will sound like a lot of work, but in reality it is a ton of fun. We'll dive into the specifics in other articles, so for now let these ideas stew in your brain.
On the communications level here's an article on ways to make money with stained glass & other crafts.
