How to score stained glass correctly

by Vanessa

Q: I am getting back into making stained glass.

I just want to make sure I am scoring (cutting) stained glass the right way. So I need more information about scoring stained glass the right way.

Our A: You asked a great question about scoring, cutting, and breaking glass.

Since this is the beginning of the stained glass process- cutting and breaking properly can make the rest of the process easier.

Please see these steps to help:

1. Only score the glass ONCE.

2. Mark the pattern on the glass- mark on the outside of the design line.

3. Cut on the backside of the glass (the smooth edge).

4. If cutting a straight line. You can score the the line. Then use your pliers by putting them perpendicular to the score. Press down and the glass will break.

5. If you are cutting a curve. Score the curved area then use the ball on the other side of your cutter and tap underneath along the score line several times until the glass breaks.

6. Make sure you use a cutter with a sharp blade

7. If using a lubricating cutter - make sure the tip is filled with the lubricating oil so you won't have chips in your glass.

8. Always wear safety glass.

9. Use a well lit area.

10. Cut your glass on a firm work surface.

11. Clean off the work area between each cut.
I hope these tips help. Let us know how you are doing.

Best of luck and thank you!
