How to get tape to stick to glass?

by Tom Mason
(Newport NC)

Q: Trying to put together panels for a lamp shade before soldering together but the tape won't stick to the glass.

I've tried electric tape, duct tape, and scotch tape. Nothing works. What am I doing wrong?

Electrical tape has been the best method to hold the sections of the lamp together for me before yu begin to take the pieces in place. Use about a 3 in. piece of electrical tape at the top, middle and bottom (leaving a tiny space for "T" tack solders at the top and bottom). You must ensure that the glass is ...very.. of any flux for the tape to stick. It does work! Another idea is to create a jig (for a 4 sided lamp) that is size of bottom of the finished lamp. Then set the sections upright in the jig and that will support the bottom edge and give it stability.

tape to stick

are you trying to hold your pattern pieces together? or are you trying to get the copper foil to stick to each piece on the edges?
I usually use a masking tape to hold the pieces together until I get accomplished what I want to do- the tape is usually about 2"thick - found at the hardware store.
If you are trying to get the copper foil to stick- make sure you glass piece is clean and dry after grinding it. Then apply the copper foil with your fingers- then use a fid to smooth down firmly to the glass.
Hope this helps
