How do I solder zinc framing to my glass panel

Q: I have made 10 or so glass panels over the past couple of years and have enjoyed this new hobby.

With my latest piece, however, I have been unable to be successful in having my zinc adhere to the solder. I've never had this problem before.

My zinc has been 'weathering' in my garage for some time now. Should I be preparing it in some way before I try to apply solder and have it stick?

A: I would recommend a couple things:

If your zinc is weathered-it may have oxidized- You will need to sand it down to rough it up and then clean well. Then you should be able to solder.

I would grind the edge of the glass, foil the edge, solder the edge (you need something for the zinc to solder to), then apply the zinc frame, spot solder.
