How do I create a pattern without a photo

by Moon

Q: I've been inspired by Disney's Beauty and the Beast stained glass pictures in the movie.

I don't know anything about creating stained glass windows. However, I want to draw a pattern (based upon another story.)

I have an idea of what I want in the design, but I'm not sure how to draw it to look like stained glass.

Any suggestions? Is there a right or wrong way to draw a stained glass pattern? Are there rules?

Our A: There are several ways that you can achieve a good template.

You can use software on your computer - under our discount stained glass supplies section we recommend different types of software - such as photoshop, illustrator (if you are great with a computer or have a mac) or glasseye 2000 - We have heard good things about the glasseye - that it is easy for beginners, however can be quite expensive.

Another way to make a correct template is to trace your pattern onto tracing paper, then cut out each pattern.

This method is good if you are using a photo as your design as you can adjust the seam lines as you see fit to make the pattern pieces without compromising the design.

We like to use a permanent pen marker to mark the glass with the pattern pieces before breaking and cutting each piece.

If it is a Disney image - you might check on coloring books??? Just a thought.

As for making your pattern. Make enough cut seams in your pattern for strength but also keep the look of the design.

Try not to make seams directly across or up and down- so that the seam runs "straight"

We would love to see what you have and will help as you work through it by sending us images.
