If you want great copper patina polish the solder lines before you patinate. I polish with an automotive wax called Nano Wax sometimes I use Brasso brass polish but I don't think the patina takes quite as well as the wax. Actually I think you are removing impurities from the surface of the solder. I didn't belive this for a long time finally I tried it, works great. Never use an ammonia based cleaning product after copper patina application. I don't even use water to clean after copper patina I use a product called Spray Way Ammonia free glass cleaner. Nowdays I only build glass kaleidoscopes and any water is Taboo. In addition finish with Pledge spray furniture wax.

I am not sure why you needed to use steel wool on your patina
A few tips for applying patina:
1. after soldering, clean the glass and solder completely with warm soap and water, rinse and dry completely
2.add your copper patina with a brush- then wash again with soap and water, rinse and dry completely.
3.then apply a good car paste wax. then buff with a soft cloth- the copper patina will shine.
