Framing a circle shape

by Joy
(Healdsburg, CA)

Q: I was sold a thick U shape to finish my window that is in a circle.

I can't get it to go around the window, it keeps slipping and will not stay inside the U. Also, the came will not shape properly.

Is there a trick I am missing or am I using the wrong U came?

A: Is the U-shape lead came? If it is then I have a few suggestions. I normally work in copper foil so Lead came is not my expertise, but if other experts here will comment, that may help as well!

Tips:

1. The lead came may not be stretched enough

2. Must work with the lead came that is stretched on the same day

3. When you are applying work slowly and a little section at a time. Put the design on a wood board, work the came around and apply horseshoe nails around as you apply.

4. Shape as you go around.

5. Usually with lead came you use a form of cement or glue inside the channel and as you form the came- you can spot solder as well.

Hopefully these tips will help. Also, under stained glass methods - read thru the Lead Came method.

I personally solder the edge of a round design – to finish it rather than putting a frame around it.
