Randy, our resident wizard, has explained his technique/story for making this specific glass art piece. Randy has a ton of fun trying different things with the stained glass as you should too. He was just fooling around making squares (you can use rectangles or triangle shapes- but it must be symmetrical to put it together). He made his pattern of 4 to 6 - 1-1/2" squares. This pattern will be used on all 4 sides as you build your piece. You can make it as tall as you want or as wide as you want. Randy decided on two squares side by side and two squares on top and bottom. He chose red and white glass- mostly because his daughter-in-law, Angie, loves red. He also chose the wavy, textured glass because of the flicker of a candle and how it is portrayed from the candle holder. First cut the glass and la it out onto the chosen pattern. Do this four times to make all four sides of the holder. Then wrap each piece in foil and solder all four sides of the pattern, cut a single piece of glass for the bottom base- 3" x 3" square. FYI - This is the measurement of the width and depth of the holder and wrapped the base edges in copper foil. Now it's time to assemble the four "walls" to the base. Stand up the first section of squares placing it on the edge of the base, and solder in sections so the first wall will stand. Next, go around and did the same thing on the other three sides. Another option would be to use tape to hold up the "walls" until you can solder them in place. Once all the "walls" are standing, work on stained glass soldering to all joints and edges together. You should also solder around the top to give it a beautifully, finished edge. A great tie in is one of our favorites - oil lamps. One of our oil lamps is a small glass container that fit perfectly in our new stained glass design. The amazing glow the oil lamp provided when lit was spectacular within the well-crafted glass piece. Now, it is your turn to take a stab at making a wonderfully crafted glass candle holder!
